BUY/SELL Analysis

J.P. Arencibia has fast tracked his way through the Blue Jays farm system and has set himself up well to be Toronto’s everyday catcher as early as next April.  With 16 HR and 72 RBI’s over two levels and a solid all-around defensive game behind the plate, Arencibia seems to have gotten past lingering back and wrist injuries that hampered his performance over the last two years.  J.P. is a very aggressive hitter who does not walk often (11 times in 300 AB’s this year) which will need to change in order to hit for decent average at the major league level.  Arencibia’s 1st year autographed cards are found in the 2007 Bowman Stelring and Elite Extra sets.  The Sterlings sell for $8-10 each and the Elite Extras (redemptions #/500) sell for about the same.  J.P. also has a 2008 Bowman Chrome Prospects auto that sells for $12-15 each.

Market Advice: Arencibia is one of several good young, power hitting A.L. catchers like Jeff Clement, Matt Wieters, Jesus Montero, and Max Ramirez that should spark some enthusiasm amongst collectors.  For a catcher who can hit 20-25 HR at the major league level, $10 bucks for a 1st year auto is a definite must BUY.
