Amendment to the Yankees/Pirates Trade

Originally it was reported on this site and many others that Xavier Nady and Damaso Marte were traded to the Yankees for Jose Tabata, Ross Ohlendorf, George Kontos, and Phil Coke.  It was reported this morning that Kontos and Coke were not part of the deal, instead, Daniel McCutchen and Jeff Karstens were sent in their place.

From a collecting perspective, this is good news for the futures of Kontos and Coke as they will remain members of the popular Yankees organization and, perhaps, useful pieces for their future.  Daniel McCutchen has been viewed by several scouts as being an aggressive pitcher with a plus fastball who could start or be used in late innings in the bullpen.  He was 4-6 at AAA Scranton Wilkes-Barre with a 3.58 ERA and 58K/70.1IP.

Karstens has been up and down with the Yankees and is pitching pretty well at Scranton Wilkes-Barre where he is 6-4 with a 3.80 ERA and 55K/68.2 IP.  Both McCutchen and Karstens, in my opinion have lower ceilings than Kontos and Coke and should be overlooked by prospectors all together.  Again, the main pieces in this trade are Nady and Tabata and the rest is fluff.

Note: Two more of Nady’s 2000 SPX RC Autos sold on Ebay today for $51.27 and $62.99 respectively, more than 100% increase since Friday.  Sell ’em if you’ve got ’em!
