Breaking News: Colby Rasmus to Miss Olympics With Strained Knee

See you in 2009 Colby

See you in 2009 Colby

St. Louis Cardinals super CF prospect Colby Rasmus strained his left knee in the first inning of Tuesday night’s game for AAA Memphis ending bid to play for Team USA in the Beijing Olympics, and likely, his changes to play for the Cardinals this season.  This injury all but ends Rasmus’ bid for a 2008 debut in St. Louis.  When healthy, Rasmus is one of the brightest and most exciting prospects in the game.  Last season Colby had a breakout season at AA Springfield hitting .275 with 29 HR 72 RBI 18 SB and 93 runs.  This season has been a different story for Rasmus as nagging injuries have hampered his production at AAA where he is hitting .249 with 11 HR 36 RBI and 15 SB.

Market Advice: Since news of Rasmus’ injury has broken out, comparisons to J.D. Drew have been abundant.  At just 21 years old, Rasmus is still ahead of the developmental curve and has a bright future.  If the Ebay market sours on Rasmus, his cards could be a bargain.  Currently, his 2005 Bowman Chrome Draft autos sell for about $70-80 each and ’05 Bowman Sterling autos sell for $35-40.  I think these prices will drop precipitously as news of his season-ending injury filters its way through the collectors ranks.  If those prices fall 30-50%, grab an auto and hope for a clean bill of health for ’09.
