BUY/SELL Analysis

6 Stubbs for 1 Price

6 Stubbs for 1 Price

Drew Stubbs is a prospect that has intrigued me since he led Texas to a College World Series championship in 2006.  He has blazing speed and Gold Glove calibur defense in CF, but the biggest detractor to his game has been his bat.  Last season he managed to hit .270 at Low-A Dayton with 12 HR and 43 RBI but he punched out 142 times.  This season, the strikeouts are still too high (100 in 109 games) and the power is still not there (5 HR) but he has handled promotions to High A Sarasota and AA Chattanooga successfully.  Stubbs has several varied autographed and SP cards in the 2007 Donruss Elite Extra set with his base autos numbered to just 494.  These sell for about $10-13 each while his non-autographed jersey cards (#’ed to 500) can be had at $4-5 apiece.

Market Analysis: Stubbs reminds me of a healthier, more talented Jayson Werth.  His blend of size, speed, and athleticism are causes for many scouts to think that Stubbs can be an all-star OF.  There are question marks that he has not completely addressed.  Regardless, I think $10-12 each for his ’07 Elite autos are a high reward BUY.

  1. Jake Fox too old for AA?? Jake leads the entire Cubs organization in Doubles, Home Runss and RBI’s.
Hope he gets a shot with a team next year.

  2. Hi PK,

Fox is indeed having a fine season at AA, but he is 26, has played AA before, and had a horrendous start at AAA. These factors downgrade Fox as a top MLB prospect.

Also, one must take into account that Geovanny Soto has pretty much locked down the catcher’s job in Chicago for the long haul.

    Thanks for the comment PK!
