David Price—Meeting His Match in AAA

Imagine pulling this card!

Imagine pulling this card!

David Price stormed through the Rays’ minor league system like gangbusters, vanquishing every foe he faced in both the Florida State League and Southern League.  Now as a member of the AAA Durham Bulls, Price has looked more ordinary in two starts.  Last night, Price pitched 5 innings allowing 3 runs (2 earned) on 7 hits with 4 walks and 3 strikeouts in a no-decision against the Pittsburgh Pirates’ AAA affiliate Indianapolis.

Two mediocre AAA have not dampened the spirits of collectors and prospectors as his cards have maintained their values.  I don’t see his 5.00 ERA in two starts at Durham as a cause for concern, rather as an opportunity for Price to work out some kinks in his approach to more advanced hitters.  I still believe that he will play a prominant role for the Rays as they head down the stretch in September whether it be in the bullpen or rotation.  That being said, Price is a long shot to make the post-season roster as he will likely have surpassed 150 IP by the time October rolls around and the Rays seem to have very few holes in their rotation and pen—so long that Perceival stays healthy when he returns.

My BUY/SELL advice for prospecting his stuff remains the same.  Grab the low-end stuff in bunches and wait until September to sell.  His value will be optimal if he gets to start, but I have an inkling that he may be more utilized in later innings much like Joba Chamberlain in ’07.
