Newest Razor Signees—Yonder Alonso and Peter Hissey

The body count now reaches 16 ’08 Draftees for Razor’s upcoming MLB prospect set with the additions of Cincinnati Reds 1st round pick (#7 overall) 1B Yonder Alonso and Boston Red Sox 4th round pick (#142 overall) OF Peter Hissey.  Here’s a closer look at each player…

Yonder Alonso

Many Reds fans wanted Gordon Beckham

Many Reds fans wanted Gordon Beckham

  • Alonso is a good left hand hitter with slightly above average power and average 1B fielding skills.  This season with the University of Miami, Alonso paced all of NCAA baseball with 69 walks opposed to just 30 strikeouts.  Scouts have compared him to Adrian Gonzalez and many believe that he has topped out physically.   Alonso signed at the deadline last Friday for $4.55 million.  He has reported with the GCL Reds but has not played in a game yet.

Peter Hissey

Hissey-fits with the Sox

  • Hissey was drafted out of a Pennsylvania high school by the Red Sox after committing to play ball at Virginia.  Hissey profiles as an athletic and projectible CF prospect who has gap to gap power potential and good speed.  He hit .509 with 26 SB his senior season and signed for $1 million at Friday’s deadline.  Hissey joins a stable of projectible young Red Sox OF prospects that include the likes of Ryan Kalish, Josh Reddick, Reid Engel and David Mailman.  Hissey has reported with the GCL Red Sox and, like Alonso, has yet to play a game.

I was talking to a friend of mine who has his finger on the pulse of the card industry and he told me that the exclusive 3-year deals that these players have signed with Razor are for “autographs only” and in no way limit their appearances as base cards in other sets.  If this is true, the Bowman Draft Set and other prospect sets may not be impacted by Razor’s presence as much as previously thought.  I will do some more research on this and get back to you with the results.

Please feel free to contribute your thoughts or knowledge in this area in the comments section.

  1. I spoke to one agent representing one of the signed players and you are right. They will be in other manufacturer’s base sets. There are currently two contracts right now, one is 3 year exclusivity and the other is just to have them sign cards, they will have the right to sign other products as well. Only the 2 dozen or so players Razor has exclusive contracts with are the ones signing only with Razor.

  2. Thanks for the input Mike. My friend seems to think that Razor will be just like another Tristar or Just product that will have a mitigable impact on other prospect-laden products in the industry.

    We shall see…
