Recent MLB Callup #7—Angel Salome

Pay pocket change for "Pocket Pudge"

Angel Salome

The Milwaukee Brewers have to be tickled with the development of their young catchers this season.  Salome is the headliner of the group after decimating Southern League pitching to the tune of a .360 BA with 13 HR 83 RBI 30 doubles and 68 runs scored in just 98 games.  at 5-7 200 lb., Salome is chisled from the same mold of future HOF backstop Ivan Rodriguez.  Like a young Pudge, Salome has a quick swing with power to the gaps and his above average athleticism compliments his strong arm and makes him very mobile behind the plate.  Unlike Pudge, “Pocket Pudge” struggles to consistently throw potential basestealers out as his accuracy has not developed.  Salome has only garnered two AB with Milwaukee and will be headed to the AFL following the regular season.  Keep a close eye on Salome’s defensive line score, as it is his arm and not his bat that is allowing Jason Kendall to keep his starting job as Milwuakee’s signal caller.

I believe that Salome will make the defensive adjustments necessary to become the starting catcher in Milwaukee, though, with Kendall signed through 2009, Salome will likely begin the season in AAA.  For collectors, that may not be a bad thing, as Salome’s cards should hover around their current prices of $1.50-2.25 each.  The 2004 Bowman Draft and Chrome cards are Salome’s sole 1st year cards.  They won’t stay at these prices forever.
